Zero Waste Thanksgiving Kit | If you’re going home for Thanksgiving, be prepared to prevent waste with a Zero Waste Kit. Waste between Thanksgiving and Christmas increases by about 25% every year. The excess packaging, food, parties, and gifts creates SO much more waste that can be prevented.

If you’re like me, then you are ready to stop contributing to that statistic. And since unfortunately, we can’t control everyone and everything around us, we have to focus on what we can control – and that’s us.

For some, you may find that your family Thanksgiving comes with disposable plates, cutlery, napkins, cups, and a lot of excess food waste. It can be discouraging when you’ve been so good at waste reduction to then create 10 pounds (4.5 Kilos) worth for one meal. Instead of enjoying time with family, you sulk in the corner in your eco-guilt cloud.

Coming prepared with your own kit can greatly reduce your waste during the Thanksgiving meal. It may also inspire who’s hosting to go reusable for the next year or inspire other family members to reduce their own waste. Being a positing influence is the BEST way to get others on the sustainable living train.

My family has always be awesome with using reusables for special family gatherings. That’s just always been our way. Except for the paper towels, cloth napkins, and disposable cups. I bring my own to reduce my waste.

If you’re unsure what your family will be using, simply ask the host. And do NOT make anyone feel guilty or terrible if disposable plates are on the agenda. You don’t attract flies with vinegar or however that saying goes.

Pack the necessary items you need and enjoy the day with the ones you care about. You’re planting that seed by being kind and thoughtful.

Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Plate
  2. Utensils
  3. Napkin
  4. Cup or Bottle
  5. A container for leftovers (What’s better than Thanksgiving leftovers?!)
  6. A container for compost

To go even farther, offer to bring reusables to the family gathering for everyone, if you have it. Like for instance, I’m going to let my family know that I’ll be bringing my large stash of cloth napkins for everyone to use so that we can save on the paper ones. I’ll gather them up at the end of the day and take them home to wash.

Zero Waste Thanksgiving

This may not seem like a big deal but it registers with people. Trust me, it really does work.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving this year! In the comments below, tell me what your favorite side is!
